The Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety will be held in Marrakech, Morocco, on 18-20 February 2025. Hosted by the Government of Morocco and the World Health Organization, with the theme of “One Road, One World, Commit to Life”, the summit will bring leaders and experts together to accelerate action towards the Sustainable Development Goals’ target of halving global road deaths by 2030. Representatives from Drive More Safely have been invited to attend this conference

This pivotal event will assess the progress made in implementing the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 during its initial five years. With road safety forming a critical pillar of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the conference aims to generate renewed commitment to achieving the target of halving global road deaths by 2030. The event will serve as a platform for 193 participating countries to share strategies, successes, and challenges in addressing this pressing global health crisis.

Alida Venter, a passionate road safety advocate and key representative of Drive More Safely, has been invited to attend this landmark event. Alida’s participation comes at a crucial time: South Africa’s road fatality rates are rising, with the 2024 festive season statistics revealing an increase in road deaths and fatal crashes compared to the previous year. Alarmingly, midway through the current decade, South Africa is falling behind its targeted reduction in road fatalities.

By attending the conference, Alida will gain invaluable insights into the measures implemented by countries that have successfully reduced road deaths. These lessons will not only empower her to advocate for improved road safety measures but will also equip her with the tools needed to hold South African leaders accountable for the current state of road safety. Alida’s presence at the conference represents a critical opportunity to bring back actionable knowledge and contribute to shaping a safer future for all road users in South Africa.

Road Safety: A Global and Local Crisis

Each year, nearly 1.2 million lives are lost to road crashes, making it a leading cause of death globally—and the #1 killer of children and young adults aged 5-29. That’s over 3,200 lives lost daily.

Yet, there is hope. More than half of all UN Member States report declines in road fatalities, with 10 countries successfully halving deaths in just a decade. These milestones prove that reducing road fatalities by 50% is achievable with the right policies, interventions, and leadership.

Be Part of the Solution

By supporting Alida, you’re not just enabling her to attend a conference – you’re investing in the safety and wellbeing of every road user in South Africa. Let’s work together to bring global best practices to our roads and create a future where safer journeys are a reality for all.
